Word cards with sound and spaced review

For parents of children learning English (or Korean or Japanese) from age 4. Each card is read aloud, your child says whether they knew it, and the words they missed come back tomorrow. Free, no sign-up, and nothing leaves this device.

Make the list in ChatGPT, practise it here

Ask ChatGPT for "20 Eiken Grade 4 words with Japanese meanings, one per line, word – meaning", paste them below with Paste your own list, and your child practises them with sound and review over the next days. Lists can also come straight from a link: `?words=apple:りんご|banana:バナナ&lang=en-US`.

How to use it with your child

  1. Choose a built-in deck, or open Paste your own list and paste one word per line ("word – meaning" works too).
  2. Pick Flip (your child says the word, flips the card and taps ○ or ↺) or Listen and pick (the device says the word and your child taps the right meaning; it is marked for them).
  3. Tap Start on this device. Each session mixes the words that are due today with a few new ones.
  4. Words your child knew move up a box and come back after 2, 4, 8 and then 16 days. Missed words come back tomorrow. All of this is kept on this device.
  5. Use 🔊 to hear a word again and 🐢 to hear it slowly. If the device has no voice for the language, the page says so and how to add one.
  6. Print sheet makes cut-out cards: print double-sided, flipping on the long edge, and each card has the word on one side and its meaning on the other.

Which school years it suits

Picture decks (animals, food, colours, body) suit ages 4–7. Action words, school things and days and months suit Years 1–4. Pasted lists work at any age, including Eiken and school vocabulary for Years 5 to Secondary 3.

Why spaced review

A word seen once is soon forgotten; a word seen again just as it fades sticks. Pencilhop uses five boxes (the Leitner method): a word your child knows waits longer each time, and a missed word starts again tomorrow. Ten minutes a day is enough.

The voices are your device's own text-to-speech voices. Quality varies by device; on most phones and tablets you can download better voices in the settings.

Questions parents ask

Where are my lists and progress saved?

Only in this browser on this device. There is no account, so lists don't move between devices. Clear this device at the bottom of the page removes them.

The cards are silent. Why?

The page uses your device's built-in voices. If none is installed for the language, add one in the device settings (the page shows where), or practise without sound.

Can I use Eiken or school word lists?

Yes: paste your own list. We don't include publishers' word lists, but any list you type or get from ChatGPT works.

How many new words a day?

Ten is the default. Choose five for younger children, or twenty before a test. Words that are due always come first.
